Safe from Harm: Why You Need a Gun Safe

The second amendment to the constitution gives Americans the right to bear arms, yet along with the ability to own a gun, comes a lot of responsibility. Owning a gun requires a high standard of safety that must be adhered to and is not to be taken lightly. According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a child dies every nine hours from a gun accident or a suicide. Hence, a gun safe is an absolute must if you own a gun.

The majority of gun-related injuries and deaths among children occurs when the child uses a gun from his or her own home or that of a relative or friend. Among younger children, ages under 12, most injuries and deaths are accidental. Older kids may use guns to commit suicide. Gun safes prevent children from getting into the cabinet and gaining access to firearms.

Keep your gun locked and unloaded in a locked gun safe. Lock the ammunition in a separate location. Don’t allow kids to handle guns, even if they aren’t loaded. This simply provides a curiosity that many young children find tempting. Place the key in the gun cabinet in a secure and secret location.

When handling guns, always double-check to make certain they aren’t loaded. Also, ensure that the child safety is engaged. Many people who own guns are concerned that they won’t be able to use them quickly enough if they are locked up. If this is a concern, you can keep the gun safe in your bedroom so that you’ll have fast and easy access to it in an emergency.

Keep in mind that if your gun is not locked in a gun safe, your children will very likely know how to find it and use it if they want to. In a survey conducted amongst teenagers, 36 percent of them stated they would be able to have access to a gun within 24 hours if they had the desire. Simply hiding your gun isn’t enough; you must take special precautions to keep your gun safe. Many gun accidents occur with young children who find the gun and play with it. All types of guns should be kept in a locked gun safe or cabinet.

Statistics show that no matter how careful you think you’re being with your gun, there is more you can do. The best protection for your gun is through the use of a gun safe. Gun safes are a necessity in households with children, but are also needed in every home. Children who are visiting may also come across your gun and can use it to harm themselves or others.

Keep in mind that all guns need to be locked up, including pellet guns and BB guns. These types of guns can be deadly and are also involved in many accidents involving children.
