It was formerly known as Los Angeles Buttes, but the name was changed after property developers drilled and filled an artificial lake to lure in prospective home buyers. That lake was allowed to evaporate after initial development stalled. There have been attempts to refill the lake, but a lack of funding has so far kept that from happening. The area was used to film parts of the television show, Bonanza at one point. The median income for the area is just over thirty eight thousand dollars. Poverty is high in the area with just over twenty three percent of the population living under the poverty line.
Lake Los Angeles is not a huge area, but there are a lot of people who are living below the established poverty line.
