Panic Room – Shelter from the Storm
You may have heard the term ‘panic room,’ but may be unaware of exactly what it is. A panic room is a designated safe room in the home or office that is specifically designed to protect against many types of harm. Contrary to popular belief, panic rooms aren’t just for the über-wealthy. In fact, many ordinary people are setting up panic rooms in their homes or offices across the country.
Panic rooms can actually serve several purposes. The main purpose of a panic room has traditionally been to protect the homeowner in case of a burglary or home invasion. The panic room is now also used as a safe place to retreat when there is any other danger, such as storms or natural disasters. Panic rooms may be located above or below ground. They are typically fortified to provide the ultimate protection.
Additionally, panic rooms may be any size. Once complete, you can furnish them as you like, making sure there is a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Some people use their panic room as a home office area. There is communication (a phone line) provided in the panic room so that you can safely get assistance if needed. You can also add any additional convenience items that you want, such as a mini fridge and a microwave, along with a small stock of food and water. This completes your panic room and transforms it into a safe storm shelter.
Panic rooms may have:
Why are they called panic, or safe, rooms? Because they have protective walls, ceilings and floors that are made to withstand more dangers than the rest of the typical home. Panic rooms may be created using steel or other strong types of materials.
Battery back-up systems provide ongoing power for a length of time, in case the power is out—which may happen during a storm or natural disaster. Typical battery back-up may last for two, four or eight hours or longer.
With a panic room, you have access to the outside world via a special telephone line or security system. The phone line is separate from the phone lines that are part of the rest of the home. There may also be a special button that sends an alarm to a security alarm center for immediate response.
A panic room provides a built-in safe where you can keep valuables such as jewelry and important papers. This eliminates the need to rent a safe deposit box while storing your valuable items in a protected place. The panic button in the panic room is simply an alarm that connects you with a security company or the local authorities.
A panic room also has convenient features such as a television, radio, refrigerator and food pantry to allow you to stay for an extended period of time. Locking doors allow you to be safe inside and protected from intruders getting in; the door is often made of thick steel or metal a burglar cannot break that into. In essence, think of the room as your own private, safe sanctuary.
