Do you need window security bars to add to the feeling of security or are they simply a waste of money? The answer to this question is actually complex. In fact, the answer depends on various other factors. For example, a big factor to think about is the other type of security features that you have in place. Modern wireless security systems also monitor windows and doors, making the need for window bars less necessary.

Window security bars are, however, a visible deterrent for burglars. Those viewing your home for a possible break-in will see the window bars in place and will be less likely to want to choose your home for burglary. Window security bars are best suited for windows that are easily accessible from the outside. The best use for security bars for windows is on homes that are in busy city neighborhoods where the possibility of a break-in is increased. When your home is located near sidewalks, streets and walkways, the windows are visible to those going by and may pose a security risk if no security measures are taken.

Window security bars are also a good idea to put into place for windows that are on second story (or higher) windows to protect children from climbing through them and falling outdoors to the ground. Keep in mind, however, that home security bars can also keep rescue personnel from gaining entry to your home in case of emergency such as fire. The best security bars for windows provide a way for people to remove them from the inside if necessary. Stationary window bars are not only dangerous in terms of an emergency, but can also be unsightly.

Sometimes the best use of window security bars is in conjunction with other forms of home security that you have in place. If you have rooms, such as a basement, where you may not have constant visual access, you may want to increase the security of those areas by getting window security bars installed. In these areas, you can feel more secure by installing permanent window bars. Burglars will not try to break a window for entry when there are window bars in place, since they will still not gain access to your home.

If you have window areas that are a safety concern to you, add a security camera to your home alarm system to deter possible burglars from considering entry. Adding as many security features to your home as possible will increase your home safety and help to reduce the risks to you and your family.

Home security is a top priority for many people. With that in mind, those who are concerned with the utmost in security are often opting to add a home intercom system into their home security plan. You’ve likely seen a home intercom system in a mansion or celebrity home showcased on television. But home intercom systems aren’t just for the rich and famous. They are now affordable additions to any home security system.

What Is a Home Intercom System Used For?

There are multiple uses for a home intercom system. It is a perfect way to communicate between rooms. With today’s large homes and sprawling floor plans, it makes sense to be able to be able to communicate quickly and easily between rooms. A home intercom system creates an internal communication system for your home. Locate intercom units in strategic locations so that your family can communicate quickly and easily while anywhere in the home.

A home intercom system saves time and steps when you want to quickly communicate with other family members. You can talk to one zone or to all zones at the same time, depending on your needs. The home intercom system is not only a convenience feature for your home, but it is also an added safety feature. Intercoms allow family members to instantly talk to others when there is an emergency.

How Does a Home Intercom System Work?

Home intercom systems connect areas of the home together through the use of intercom panels that are secured to the wall. A home intercom system can be wired or wireless. Wireless systems offer the most flexible solutions because they can be placed in many areas where wiring may not be feasible. Intercoms can be set up for two-way talk or for monitoring only based on your specific needs. For example, a one-way monitoring intercom may be useful for a baby’s room, eliminating the need for any other type of monitoring device.

Home intercom systems are simple to use. They use an easy push-to-talk system that allows you to communicate quickly with others in the home. A wireless home intercom system has a limited range – typically up to 1,000 feet in distance. Wired systems have no distance limitations. You can also get intercom units that are weatherproof for outdoor installations such as at a doorway or near the swimming pool.

Are Intercom Systems Worth the Cost?

Home intercom systems are perfect for safety and convenience. They are an added feature that may be a simple addition to your home security system. The only costs involved are those of the units and the initial installation, so the system doesn’t cost anything to operate. Not only is a home intercom system helpful for your family, but it also may add additional resale value to your home. Buyers often prefer homes that have communication between rooms, making it safe and easy to talk to family members throughout the home.

An alarm system can be an important addition to your home security plan; however, how do you choose the right solution for your needs? Alarm systems can actually deter robberies. The main purposes of an alarm system are to alert you of any type of break-in and to stop break-ins from happening in the first place. There are two main types of alarm systems from which to choose: a wireless alarm system, which utilizes wireless technology for home placement, and a hardwired alarm system, which requires the use of wires that connect the alarm system components together.

Wireless Home Alarm System

A wireless alarm system is state-of-the-art in home alarm technology. Wireless alarm systems are best for use in places where you need various components that need to be tied together throughout the home and grounds. A wireless alarm system eliminates the need for wires and therefore, allows you freedom in placement of all the devices you want installed in your system. A wireless home alarm system uses wireless technology similar to that of your wireless network to connect the system.

You can use many types of items that connect quickly and easily into your wireless home alarm system. Some of these include door and window monitors, alarm sirens, cameras, motion detectors and intercoms. These can be installed more easily without the need for wires. The prices of these components are similar to those of wired equivalents. The price for installation is also similar when comparing a wireless alarm system with a hardwired alarm system.

Hardwired Alarm System

Hardwired home security systems require the use of wires to operate each of the components of the system. For example, you will need to have wires connecting the front door with the alarm box and the siren, as well as a wire back to the telephone connection. When you add other doors, window cameras and intercoms, each will also need to have a wire connecting it to the system. An alarm specialist can run the wires inside the walls and ceilings of your home.

Some homes, particularly older ones, may not have the ability to have wires run inside the walls to all the locations where you want security equipment. In this case, you must either run the wires exposed, which often looks tacky, or eliminate the security component from your system. Some jurisdictions restrict the exposure of low-level wiring and thus, they must be installed inside the walls.

No matter what your home alarm choice may be—a wireless alarm system or a hardwired alarm system—you will need to keep a few key things in mind. Consider the importance of keeping a connection to the alarm company. This easy phone line connection can now be cellular as well. Connecting your alarm system to the alarm company provides you with an additional level of support. When the alarm is compromised, it will automatically alert the company, whereby it is able to react quickly. Whether you choose a wireless alarm system or a wired system, you’ll be secure in knowing that you are protecting your family and your home from harm.

Have you ever felt afraid in your own home? A home burglary takes place an average of every 16 seconds in the United States. This statistic can make you fearful about your safety no matter where you live. Don’t live in fear – you have the power to do something about it. Take action and stay alert with a motion sensor alarm. Motion sensor alarms come in various styles and are made for different uses. A motion detector is commonly used as part of the home security package.

How a Motion Sensor Alarm Works

A motion sensor alarm uses detection devices that will sound an alarm if it detects movement. Professionals set up motion sensors to work exactly as you need them to. Don’t worry if you have pets because the motion sensors can be set to accommodate this movement. Motion sensors set up areas of various methods of detection to determine movement.

A motion sensor alarm can be designated by zones in your home. You can actually set some zones while you are still moving about in another zone. For example, you can set the downstairs zone to be turned on while you are upstairs. You can designate many different zones in your home in order to best take care of your security while giving you the best freedom.

A motion sensor alarm is set up through access panels that are located strategically throughout your home. Typically there is one at each door and on each level of the home. If you have various zones, each can be indicated and controlled through the control or access panels. You can set up a zone for your front outdoor area to alert you if someone approaches your door or walks near your driveway. A motion sensor alarm is often part of the regular alarm system that also includes alarms when doors or windows are opened.

Types of Motion Sensor Alarms

There are various types of sensors that are used in a motion sensor alarm. The most common type of sensors use infrared technology to create light beams that will sound an alarm when broken. Other types of motion sensor alarms include laser beams, visible light beams and ultrasonic devices that use contact for them to be activated. Laser beams are similar to infrared beams but use different technology – microwaves – to connect the beams. Some sensors use vibration to set them off.

No matter the type of motion sensor alarm, each one works in a similar way – each is designed to alert someone when motion is detected. You’ll be sure to feel safer and more secure when you know that your home is alarmed with motion sensors. As with most alarms, the result is two-fold. The sound of the audible alarm often deters any criminal activity by frightening potential intruders. The alarm also alerts homeowners to a possible break-in so that they can take action. A motion sensor alarm can be part of the total alarm package that is set up to automatically call security when there is a problem.

Who Needs a Motion Sensor Alarm

Almost everyone can benefit from adding a motion detector to his or her security set-up. Crime rates are going up in almost every community in the country. Even those who thought they were safe are no longer free from worry about a break-in. Most robberies occur when homeowners aren’t at home so having alarms set up to call security centers makes sense. Anyone who wants to have peace of mind should consider using a motion sensor alarm.

Robberies, home invasions and vandalism are on the rise and you may be wondering how to better protect your home and family. Home security is a major concern for many people. One way to provide home security is by adding a security alarm system. When you want to keep people away from your property, the best way to do so is by installing a security fence. Security fences can greatly increase your peace of mind by denying people entry onto your property.

A security fence is designed to surround your home completely, making it a secure haven for you and your family. Security fences are made of strong metal that cannot be bent or cut through. They are also made to be climb-proof so that people cannot scale the fence to gain entry. Security fences are accessed using a security gate that is usually located at the front of the premises.

Security fences come in a variety of styles and designs and range greatly in price. These types of fences are typically more expensive than standard fences because they use high quality strong materials and are usually higher. Security fences are the best addition to a home security system and are particularly helpful in keeping out visitors; guests must be allowed entry. There are some pros and cons to getting a security fence:

Pros

Provides high level security

Keeps out burglars, peddlers and animals

You can determine who to let in

Strong and long-lasting fences

Good looking fence when well chosen

Cons

More expensive than other fences

Harder for homeowners to get in and out of the property

Needs monitoring

Requires access

Can make your home look unappealing

When choosing a security fence, consider these pros and cons. If you live in an area where burglaries are on the rise or in a rural area, you may need a security fence to protect you. Add a security fence to your alarm system and incorporate motion sensor lights and security surveillance cameras to create the safest space possible. Choose a security fence that blends well with your home and outdoor landscaping. Security fences come in different colors and design choices. Decide on a fence that requires the least ongoing maintenance in order to look good. Pick a fence that is high enough to prevent people from climbing over it. A well-made security fence will provide durable protection for many years to come.

You may have heard the term ‘panic room,’ but may be unaware of exactly what it is. A panic room is a designated safe room in the home or office that is specifically designed to protect against many types of harm. Contrary to popular belief, panic rooms aren’t just for the über-wealthy. In fact, many ordinary people are setting up panic rooms in their homes or offices across the country.

Panic rooms can actually serve several purposes. The main purpose of a panic room has traditionally been to protect the homeowner in case of a burglary or home invasion. The panic room is now also used as a safe place to retreat when there is any other danger, such as storms or natural disasters. Panic rooms may be located above or below ground. They are typically fortified to provide the ultimate protection.

Additionally, panic rooms may be any size. Once complete, you can furnish them as you like, making sure there is a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Some people use their panic room as a home office area. There is communication (a phone line) provided in the panic room so that you can safely get assistance if needed. You can also add any additional convenience items that you want, such as a mini fridge and a microwave, along with a small stock of food and water. This completes your panic room and transforms it into a safe storm shelter.

Panic rooms may have:

Why are they called panic, or safe, rooms? Because they have protective walls, ceilings and floors that are made to withstand more dangers than the rest of the typical home. Panic rooms may be created using steel or other strong types of materials.

Battery back-up systems provide ongoing power for a length of time, in case the power is out—which may happen during a storm or natural disaster. Typical battery back-up may last for two, four or eight hours or longer.

With a panic room, you have access to the outside world via a special telephone line or security system. The phone line is separate from the phone lines that are part of the rest of the home. There may also be a special button that sends an alarm to a security alarm center for immediate response.

A panic room provides a built-in safe where you can keep valuables such as jewelry and important papers. This eliminates the need to rent a safe deposit box while storing your valuable items in a protected place. The panic button in the panic room is simply an alarm that connects you with a security company or the local authorities.

A panic room also has convenient features such as a television, radio, refrigerator and food pantry to allow you to stay for an extended period of time. Locking doors allow you to be safe inside and protected from intruders getting in; the door is often made of thick steel or metal a burglar cannot break that into. In essence, think of the room as your own private, safe sanctuary.

When you’re ready to choose an alarm system, there are several decisions to make. Probably the biggest decision to make is whether to choose alarm system monitoring or an unmonitored alarm system. There are some advantages to each one and the ultimate choice is yours.

Alarm system monitoring provides the highest level of security because your alarm system provider monitors your house all day and all night. Of course, you’ll need to pay for this service. There is a monthly fee associated with alarm system monitoring service. You will also need to have a telephone line for the alarm, which is necessary to call out in case of an alarm or emergency. These telephone connections can now be cellular in some instances.

There are also some extra features that monitored alarms can support. For example, if there is a medical emergency, you can press the call button and automatically be connected via hands-free speaker to the security center. They will be able to talk to you and even call for police, fire or ambulance if needed.

Alarm System Monitoring

Monitored alarms allow you to have access to live security personnel 24/7

Provides immediate help in emergencies

Added peace of mind

Give good security support when not at home

Best solution for those without nearby neighbors

Increased security for young and old family members

An unmonitored alarm system is the simplest of home alarm system monitoring devices. In the case of unmonitored alarms, the system simply sounds an audible alert when there is a breach of security. The alarm must be heard in order to be responded to, however. In many cases, break-ins occur while homeowners are not at home, so the probability of someone hearing the alarm when it sounds is slim. Nonetheless, alarms do tend to scare away intruders; most burglars will retreat hastily when confronted with any type of audible alarm.

Unmonitored Alarm System

Unmonitored alarm systems are less expensive than alarm system monitoring

They do not require a telephone line for connection

No monthly fee

Easy to install

Deters potential intruders with loud audible alarm sound

Your security system is designed to keep you safe. You’ll get the most benefit from your alarm keypad system when you know and understand how to operate the control panel. The control panel is at the heart of the keypad security system and can perform various functions. It is important to learn the functions of the control panel. The alarm control panel uses a microprocessor that allows it to control many features, functions and devices. While most keypads have similar functions, you should review your own alarm keypad instructions for specific information.

Arming and Disarming Features – The most important part of the keypad security system to learn is how to set and cancel the alarm when necessary. This is often programmed with a simple push of the button.

Test Button – The test button allows you to quickly test the functionality of the alarm keypad with a press of the button. Experts recommend testing your keypad security system monthly. Remember that a non-working system offers you no protection.

User Code – Enter your own user code into the keypad to quickly and easily disarm the alarm keypad. Make the code easy for you to remember but hard for other people to guess. For example, don’t make the code your address or your license plate number because others can easily figure these out.

Keypad – The alarm control panel has a keypad that contains numbers. This is used to enter your alarm code into the keypad security system to activate the alarm, as well as to disarm it.

Battery Backup – The control panel typically has a standby battery that will allow you to use the panel should the electricity go out. Check the battery and replace it yearly. If the electricity does go out, the panel will typically function for up to 80 hours on battery backup.

Zones – If you have various zones set up in your living space, these may be controlled using buttons on your alarm keypad. When testing your alarm, be sure to test all zones to ensure they are working properly.

Emergency Panic Button – If equipped, the emergency panic button will give you 24/7 access to your security provider. Simply push the button and get an immediate voice response. Then, communicate your needs to the security company for quick help.

Status Buttons – Some alarm keypad control panels come with fully synchronized zones that report continually with the main control panel. If one of the zones does not report, you will be informed by seeing a signal on the display of the unit.

Chime/Alarm – The control panel on an alarm keypad may in some cases act as a door chime. This can be programmed to chime anytime a door in the system is opened. The panel also has its own alarm signal that sounds when there is a compromise to the system.

Scheduling Features – The alarm keypad may have the ability to control various security features in the home. For example, you may be able to set and control the window alarms, lights or motion sensors by using the alarm keypad to schedule the alarm setting, as well as for immediate alarm setting.

You’ve probably seen a few television sitcoms that depict unsafe homes having 10 locks running up and down the doorway. Do you really need to have several or more locks on your door in order for you to feel safe? If you select the right type of home security door locks, you should only need one lock on your door. There are some factors to consider when choosing the best door locks for your home:

Sturdy home security locks are the best type to use for your outside doors. These should be deadbolt-style locks. Deadbolts provide the best method for sturdy locking of any door.

Choose heavy-duty home security door locks. Don’t skimp or try to save money on this important area. Larger, thicker or heavier locks are the sign of a sturdier lock and will provide you with the ultimate in home security.

Add a security chain in addition to your main deadbolt lock. Keep the chain latched when you are at home in order to provide some additional protection when you do open the door.

Use a double lock method for locking the main entrances to your home. This means that you should use both the lock that is part of the doorknob (if there is one), as well as a separate deadbolt lock that is typically installed above the doorknob.

Have your home security locks professionally installed. Incorrect installation can lead to problems with home security. The best home security door locks require installation by someone who has experience and the correct tools to use for proper installation.

Install a peephole in your door if you don’t already have one. A peephole allows you to see out your front door before you open it. Never open your front door for a stranger.

Add a security camera to your front entrance. A security camera will provide you with access to view what is happening at the entrance to your home and will also act as a deterrent for potential thieves.

In addition to a security camera, add a motion sensor light. The light will go on any time someone approaches your front entrance, allowing you to better view who is there before opening the door.

Change the locks when you move into a new home. Don’t assume that the previous owner has surrendered all the keys. Have new home security locks installed on all outer doors or windows as needed, including garage doors.

The type of door that you have may have more to do with the possibility of a break-in than the lock itself. Strong, thick doors, such as those made of heavy steel or solid wood, are much better than thinner, flimsier-style doors. Kicking the door in is a common way for burglars to open locked doors.

Putting good home security locks on your doors will protect you from possible burglaries and will give you peace of mind that you need to feel safe in your home. Use home security locks in conjunction with other security measures to ensure that your home is as safe as possible. To make sure that your home is as secure as it should be, walk around your home in both daylight and in the dark. Make notes of what areas need attention and then put some effort into adding security in these areas.

The second amendment to the constitution gives Americans the right to bear arms, yet along with the ability to own a gun, comes a lot of responsibility. Owning a gun requires a high standard of safety that must be adhered to and is not to be taken lightly. According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a child dies every nine hours from a gun accident or a suicide. Hence, a gun safe is an absolute must if you own a gun.

The majority of gun-related injuries and deaths among children occurs when the child uses a gun from his or her own home or that of a relative or friend. Among younger children, ages under 12, most injuries and deaths are accidental. Older kids may use guns to commit suicide. Gun safes prevent children from getting into the cabinet and gaining access to firearms.

Keep your gun locked and unloaded in a locked gun safe. Lock the ammunition in a separate location. Don’t allow kids to handle guns, even if they aren’t loaded. This simply provides a curiosity that many young children find tempting. Place the key in the gun cabinet in a secure and secret location.

When handling guns, always double-check to make certain they aren’t loaded. Also, ensure that the child safety is engaged. Many people who own guns are concerned that they won’t be able to use them quickly enough if they are locked up. If this is a concern, you can keep the gun safe in your bedroom so that you’ll have fast and easy access to it in an emergency.

Keep in mind that if your gun is not locked in a gun safe, your children will very likely know how to find it and use it if they want to. In a survey conducted amongst teenagers, 36 percent of them stated they would be able to have access to a gun within 24 hours if they had the desire. Simply hiding your gun isn’t enough; you must take special precautions to keep your gun safe. Many gun accidents occur with young children who find the gun and play with it. All types of guns should be kept in a locked gun safe or cabinet.

Statistics show that no matter how careful you think you’re being with your gun, there is more you can do. The best protection for your gun is through the use of a gun safe. Gun safes are a necessity in households with children, but are also needed in every home. Children who are visiting may also come across your gun and can use it to harm themselves or others.

Keep in mind that all guns need to be locked up, including pellet guns and BB guns. These types of guns can be deadly and are also involved in many accidents involving children.
