Home security is a top priority for many people. With that in mind, those who are concerned with the utmost in security are often opting to add a home intercom system into their home security plan. You’ve likely seen a home intercom system in a mansion or celebrity home showcased on television. But home intercom systems aren’t just for the rich and famous. They are now affordable additions to any home security system.

What Is a Home Intercom System Used For?

There are multiple uses for a home intercom system. It is a perfect way to communicate between rooms. With today’s large homes and sprawling floor plans, it makes sense to be able to be able to communicate quickly and easily between rooms. A home intercom system creates an internal communication system for your home. Locate intercom units in strategic locations so that your family can communicate quickly and easily while anywhere in the home.

A home intercom system saves time and steps when you want to quickly communicate with other family members. You can talk to one zone or to all zones at the same time, depending on your needs. The home intercom system is not only a convenience feature for your home, but it is also an added safety feature. Intercoms allow family members to instantly talk to others when there is an emergency.

How Does a Home Intercom System Work?

Home intercom systems connect areas of the home together through the use of intercom panels that are secured to the wall. A home intercom system can be wired or wireless. Wireless systems offer the most flexible solutions because they can be placed in many areas where wiring may not be feasible. Intercoms can be set up for two-way talk or for monitoring only based on your specific needs. For example, a one-way monitoring intercom may be useful for a baby’s room, eliminating the need for any other type of monitoring device.

Home intercom systems are simple to use. They use an easy push-to-talk system that allows you to communicate quickly with others in the home. A wireless home intercom system has a limited range – typically up to 1,000 feet in distance. Wired systems have no distance limitations. You can also get intercom units that are weatherproof for outdoor installations such as at a doorway or near the swimming pool.

Are Intercom Systems Worth the Cost?

Home intercom systems are perfect for safety and convenience. They are an added feature that may be a simple addition to your home security system. The only costs involved are those of the units and the initial installation, so the system doesn’t cost anything to operate. Not only is a home intercom system helpful for your family, but it also may add additional resale value to your home. Buyers often prefer homes that have communication between rooms, making it safe and easy to talk to family members throughout the home.

An alarm system can be an important addition to your home security plan; however, how do you choose the right solution for your needs? Alarm systems can actually deter robberies. The main purposes of an alarm system are to alert you of any type of break-in and to stop break-ins from happening in the first place. There are two main types of alarm systems from which to choose: a wireless alarm system, which utilizes wireless technology for home placement, and a hardwired alarm system, which requires the use of wires that connect the alarm system components together.

Wireless Home Alarm System

A wireless alarm system is state-of-the-art in home alarm technology. Wireless alarm systems are best for use in places where you need various components that need to be tied together throughout the home and grounds. A wireless alarm system eliminates the need for wires and therefore, allows you freedom in placement of all the devices you want installed in your system. A wireless home alarm system uses wireless technology similar to that of your wireless network to connect the system.

You can use many types of items that connect quickly and easily into your wireless home alarm system. Some of these include door and window monitors, alarm sirens, cameras, motion detectors and intercoms. These can be installed more easily without the need for wires. The prices of these components are similar to those of wired equivalents. The price for installation is also similar when comparing a wireless alarm system with a hardwired alarm system.

Hardwired Alarm System

Hardwired home security systems require the use of wires to operate each of the components of the system. For example, you will need to have wires connecting the front door with the alarm box and the siren, as well as a wire back to the telephone connection. When you add other doors, window cameras and intercoms, each will also need to have a wire connecting it to the system. An alarm specialist can run the wires inside the walls and ceilings of your home.

Some homes, particularly older ones, may not have the ability to have wires run inside the walls to all the locations where you want security equipment. In this case, you must either run the wires exposed, which often looks tacky, or eliminate the security component from your system. Some jurisdictions restrict the exposure of low-level wiring and thus, they must be installed inside the walls.

No matter what your home alarm choice may be—a wireless alarm system or a hardwired alarm system—you will need to keep a few key things in mind. Consider the importance of keeping a connection to the alarm company. This easy phone line connection can now be cellular as well. Connecting your alarm system to the alarm company provides you with an additional level of support. When the alarm is compromised, it will automatically alert the company, whereby it is able to react quickly. Whether you choose a wireless alarm system or a wired system, you’ll be secure in knowing that you are protecting your family and your home from harm.

Have you ever felt afraid in your own home? A home burglary takes place an average of every 16 seconds in the United States. This statistic can make you fearful about your safety no matter where you live. Don’t live in fear – you have the power to do something about it. Take action and stay alert with a motion sensor alarm. Motion sensor alarms come in various styles and are made for different uses. A motion detector is commonly used as part of the home security package.

How a Motion Sensor Alarm Works

A motion sensor alarm uses detection devices that will sound an alarm if it detects movement. Professionals set up motion sensors to work exactly as you need them to. Don’t worry if you have pets because the motion sensors can be set to accommodate this movement. Motion sensors set up areas of various methods of detection to determine movement.

A motion sensor alarm can be designated by zones in your home. You can actually set some zones while you are still moving about in another zone. For example, you can set the downstairs zone to be turned on while you are upstairs. You can designate many different zones in your home in order to best take care of your security while giving you the best freedom.

A motion sensor alarm is set up through access panels that are located strategically throughout your home. Typically there is one at each door and on each level of the home. If you have various zones, each can be indicated and controlled through the control or access panels. You can set up a zone for your front outdoor area to alert you if someone approaches your door or walks near your driveway. A motion sensor alarm is often part of the regular alarm system that also includes alarms when doors or windows are opened.

Types of Motion Sensor Alarms

There are various types of sensors that are used in a motion sensor alarm. The most common type of sensors use infrared technology to create light beams that will sound an alarm when broken. Other types of motion sensor alarms include laser beams, visible light beams and ultrasonic devices that use contact for them to be activated. Laser beams are similar to infrared beams but use different technology – microwaves – to connect the beams. Some sensors use vibration to set them off.

No matter the type of motion sensor alarm, each one works in a similar way – each is designed to alert someone when motion is detected. You’ll be sure to feel safer and more secure when you know that your home is alarmed with motion sensors. As with most alarms, the result is two-fold. The sound of the audible alarm often deters any criminal activity by frightening potential intruders. The alarm also alerts homeowners to a possible break-in so that they can take action. A motion sensor alarm can be part of the total alarm package that is set up to automatically call security when there is a problem.

Who Needs a Motion Sensor Alarm

Almost everyone can benefit from adding a motion detector to his or her security set-up. Crime rates are going up in almost every community in the country. Even those who thought they were safe are no longer free from worry about a break-in. Most robberies occur when homeowners aren’t at home so having alarms set up to call security centers makes sense. Anyone who wants to have peace of mind should consider using a motion sensor alarm.

You may have heard the term ‘panic room,’ but may be unaware of exactly what it is. A panic room is a designated safe room in the home or office that is specifically designed to protect against many types of harm. Contrary to popular belief, panic rooms aren’t just for the über-wealthy. In fact, many ordinary people are setting up panic rooms in their homes or offices across the country.

Panic rooms can actually serve several purposes. The main purpose of a panic room has traditionally been to protect the homeowner in case of a burglary or home invasion. The panic room is now also used as a safe place to retreat when there is any other danger, such as storms or natural disasters. Panic rooms may be located above or below ground. They are typically fortified to provide the ultimate protection.

Additionally, panic rooms may be any size. Once complete, you can furnish them as you like, making sure there is a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Some people use their panic room as a home office area. There is communication (a phone line) provided in the panic room so that you can safely get assistance if needed. You can also add any additional convenience items that you want, such as a mini fridge and a microwave, along with a small stock of food and water. This completes your panic room and transforms it into a safe storm shelter.

Panic rooms may have:

Why are they called panic, or safe, rooms? Because they have protective walls, ceilings and floors that are made to withstand more dangers than the rest of the typical home. Panic rooms may be created using steel or other strong types of materials.

Battery back-up systems provide ongoing power for a length of time, in case the power is out—which may happen during a storm or natural disaster. Typical battery back-up may last for two, four or eight hours or longer.

With a panic room, you have access to the outside world via a special telephone line or security system. The phone line is separate from the phone lines that are part of the rest of the home. There may also be a special button that sends an alarm to a security alarm center for immediate response.

A panic room provides a built-in safe where you can keep valuables such as jewelry and important papers. This eliminates the need to rent a safe deposit box while storing your valuable items in a protected place. The panic button in the panic room is simply an alarm that connects you with a security company or the local authorities.

A panic room also has convenient features such as a television, radio, refrigerator and food pantry to allow you to stay for an extended period of time. Locking doors allow you to be safe inside and protected from intruders getting in; the door is often made of thick steel or metal a burglar cannot break that into. In essence, think of the room as your own private, safe sanctuary.

When you’re ready to choose an alarm system, there are several decisions to make. Probably the biggest decision to make is whether to choose alarm system monitoring or an unmonitored alarm system. There are some advantages to each one and the ultimate choice is yours.

Alarm system monitoring provides the highest level of security because your alarm system provider monitors your house all day and all night. Of course, you’ll need to pay for this service. There is a monthly fee associated with alarm system monitoring service. You will also need to have a telephone line for the alarm, which is necessary to call out in case of an alarm or emergency. These telephone connections can now be cellular in some instances.

There are also some extra features that monitored alarms can support. For example, if there is a medical emergency, you can press the call button and automatically be connected via hands-free speaker to the security center. They will be able to talk to you and even call for police, fire or ambulance if needed.

Alarm System Monitoring

Monitored alarms allow you to have access to live security personnel 24/7

Provides immediate help in emergencies

Added peace of mind

Give good security support when not at home

Best solution for those without nearby neighbors

Increased security for young and old family members

An unmonitored alarm system is the simplest of home alarm system monitoring devices. In the case of unmonitored alarms, the system simply sounds an audible alert when there is a breach of security. The alarm must be heard in order to be responded to, however. In many cases, break-ins occur while homeowners are not at home, so the probability of someone hearing the alarm when it sounds is slim. Nonetheless, alarms do tend to scare away intruders; most burglars will retreat hastily when confronted with any type of audible alarm.

Unmonitored Alarm System

Unmonitored alarm systems are less expensive than alarm system monitoring

They do not require a telephone line for connection

No monthly fee

Easy to install

Deters potential intruders with loud audible alarm sound

When you are looking for the best protection against home burglaries, you need to take your peace of mind and your family’s safety in consideration when choosing your best alarm system monitoring solution. The costs to install the alarm system are typically the largest expense you will have with your security system, and ongoing monthly charges are minimal. Whatever your choice may be, congrats for taking the steps necessary to keep you and your family safe.

Your security system is designed to keep you safe. You’ll get the most benefit from your alarm keypad system when you know and understand how to operate the control panel. The control panel is at the heart of the keypad security system and can perform various functions. It is important to learn the functions of the control panel. The alarm control panel uses a microprocessor that allows it to control many features, functions and devices. While most keypads have similar functions, you should review your own alarm keypad instructions for specific information.

Arming and Disarming Features – The most important part of the keypad security system to learn is how to set and cancel the alarm when necessary. This is often programmed with a simple push of the button.

Test Button – The test button allows you to quickly test the functionality of the alarm keypad with a press of the button. Experts recommend testing your keypad security system monthly. Remember that a non-working system offers you no protection.

User Code – Enter your own user code into the keypad to quickly and easily disarm the alarm keypad. Make the code easy for you to remember but hard for other people to guess. For example, don’t make the code your address or your license plate number because others can easily figure these out.

Keypad – The alarm control panel has a keypad that contains numbers. This is used to enter your alarm code into the keypad security system to activate the alarm, as well as to disarm it.

Battery Backup – The control panel typically has a standby battery that will allow you to use the panel should the electricity go out. Check the battery and replace it yearly. If the electricity does go out, the panel will typically function for up to 80 hours on battery backup.

Zones – If you have various zones set up in your living space, these may be controlled using buttons on your alarm keypad. When testing your alarm, be sure to test all zones to ensure they are working properly.

Emergency Panic Button – If equipped, the emergency panic button will give you 24/7 access to your security provider. Simply push the button and get an immediate voice response. Then, communicate your needs to the security company for quick help.

Status Buttons – Some alarm keypad control panels come with fully synchronized zones that report continually with the main control panel. If one of the zones does not report, you will be informed by seeing a signal on the display of the unit.

Chime/Alarm – The control panel on an alarm keypad may in some cases act as a door chime. This can be programmed to chime anytime a door in the system is opened. The panel also has its own alarm signal that sounds when there is a compromise to the system.

Scheduling Features – The alarm keypad may have the ability to control various security features in the home. For example, you may be able to set and control the window alarms, lights or motion sensors by using the alarm keypad to schedule the alarm setting, as well as for immediate alarm setting.

Attention, friends: Home security cameras aren’t as expensive as you think! They provide the security and functionality that you need; they’re a great addition to any home security system; and they can be purchased at prices the average person can afford. Additionally, they can be used alone to provide you with the peace of mind you deserve. One of the best things about home security cameras is that you can place them almost anywhere, including indoors or outdoors.

A home security camera system fulfills a couple of important needs. Home security cameras act as a deterrent for would-be robbers. Thefts occur least often on property where security cameras are visible. Those who are budget-minded may consider installing at least one camera near the front door, which helps to identify visitors and will deter potential break-ins.

Costs can vary greatly for security camera installation and maintenance. The first consideration is the type of camera and camera mount that is required. Single position cameras are the most common and the least expensive. They will provide a specific view and must be set into position by hand. Moveable cameras are more expensive but provide you with a much greater range of view than stationary cameras can.

The more home security cameras that you want to install, the greater the expenses will be. Home security cameras typically use closed circuit television to display the camera views. You can set up a television monitor specifically to view security cameras and can have more than one monitor if you need to. Additionally, you can choose to record the camera activity. This provides you with a record of the cameras that you can easily go back to if need be.

The costs of setting up your security cameras will depend on how many cameras you have, as well as the sophistication of the system. The least expensive home security camera options will provide you with a single camera that is strategically positioned outside your home’s entrance. When you incorporate home security cameras with your main home security system, you’ll get the best value for your money, since the system is already in place.

Tips for using home security cameras in your security system:

Decide on the main reason you want to use home security cameras. For example, you may want to view your front entrance or areas that are susceptible to problems, or you may simply want to deter would-be burglars.

Mount cameras in places where they are easily secured and out of reach. Too often criminals simply reach up and move the camera to avoid being seen. There have also been reports of criminals actually stealing the cameras themselves!

Choose cameras that are within your budget. Keep in mind that they may need to be replaced after a few years – particularly in cold climates where weather is a factor.

Don’t try to fool the criminals. Too often people have mounted fake cameras in the hopes of deterring crime. Instead, the cameras were noticed to be fakes and caused even more criminal activity to happen.

Use a home security camera system in addition to your other home alarm system. This will increase your home’s security and give you peace of mind.

The prospect of burglary or any other crime is surely frightening to any homeowner. Luckily, a motion sensor alarm can help to deter and prevent such crimes. There are several different types of motion detector alarms; each one fits different purposes and needs. Knowing the differences between the alarm types is the first crucial step to picking a motion detector alarm.

The Three Types

There are only really three types of motion sensors: microwave, ultrasonic and passive infrared sensors. They all work in different ways and have benefits and drawbacks.

A microwave motion detector works in a similar fashion to police radar guns. It sends out microwaves that are reflected back when there is motion in the surrounding area. Microwave motion detectors are relatively inexpensive to implement as alarm systems, but they are not as effective or accurate as other types.

Ultrasonic sensors send out sonic pulses that are reflected back when there is motion in the vicinity. These work in a similar fashion to sonar systems. Both the ultrasonic and microwave motion sensor alarm emit energy in order to function properly.

Passive infrared sensors, on the other hand, simply look for body heat. They do not send out any energy into the vicinity, which makes them harder to detect by savvy thieves.

Looking for More Accuracy?

If you’re looking for more accurate alarms, then you can combine two or even three motion detector technologies into the same device. When several of the technologies are utilized at the same time, the result is a heightened accuracy level. Many homeowners may opt for this option for this very reason.

No matter which solution you choose, it is worth considering getting a motion sensor alarm for your home security purposes. There are many options for security once you get a motion sensor alarm. For example, some people choose to link their motion detector alarm to night vision cameras for added safety.

Picking a motion sensor alarm isn’t an easy process, as there are many types from which to choose. However, knowledge of the different types of motion detectors on the market can make the process easier and more straightforward. A motion detector alarm is a must when considering a new home security system or an update to your current one.

As more and more Americans are experiencing lay-offs and financial pressure, it’s no wonder crime is on the rise. When society is financially unsound, people have a tendency to panic and act out in ways that are uncharacteristic. A wireless security system provides homeowners with peace of mind, and in today’s world, serenity in the midst of chaos is priceless.

Do you live in fear of what might happen next? Are you anxious about the safety of your loved ones? Does a dark cloud loom over you at all times? Wireless alarm systems not only protect your valuables, but also keep you and your family members from harm. In the end, they are great investments for ensuring total home security.

Check out the top three reasons why you can’t afford not to have a wireless security system:

Reason #1: Protection & Peace of Mind

The fact that wireless alarm systems provide protection and peace of mind is really a no-brainer; however, it’s always worth pointing out. All too often, we hear about horrific incidents of home invasion, whereby homeowners are robbed of their valuables—and some have even lost their lives. Let’s face it: Protection from outside influences should not be a game of Russian roulette, but rather, a guarantee.

Reason #2: Better Technology

As we well know, technology is continuously evolving. From medical advancements to breakthroughs in computer science, a ‘bigger and better’ edition is continuously introduced. A wireless security system is much more efficient than one that is hard-wired for many reasons.

First, many burglars have figured their way around traditional alarm systems with physical wires. With wireless, the system is virtually undetectable both outdoors and indoors. Second, the installation process of wireless alarm systems is easy and quick, as minimal drilling is required. And third, a wireless alarm is user-friendly; you can control the entire house at the touch of a button.

Reason #3: Faster Response

Along with better technology comes better response. Wireless alarm systems leave very little room for error and thus, the monitoring is top-notch. These days, home security companies offer all sorts of devices and products, including infrared motion detectors, surveillance cameras and keychain remote access. For just a small monthly fee, you get impeccable service, advanced technology and, best of all, peace of mind.

Wireless – The Way to Go

If you conduct a simple Google search on ‘wireless alarm systems,’ it’s likely you’ll come across several websites that tout do-it-yourself (DIY) home security. While DIY is much safer than having no security whatsoever, it’s best to have your system professionally installed and monitored. When it comes to safety, you should compromise nothing. So what are you waiting for? Protection and peace of mind, better technology, and a faster response is only a phone call or click away. (Make sure you conduct research on security companies and ask for customer references!)
