Your security system is designed to keep you safe. You’ll get the most benefit from your alarm keypad system when you know and understand how to operate the control panel. The control panel is at the heart of the keypad security system and can perform various functions. It is important to learn the functions of the control panel. The alarm control panel uses a microprocessor that allows it to control many features, functions and devices. While most keypads have similar functions, you should review your own alarm keypad instructions for specific information.

Arming and Disarming Features – The most important part of the keypad security system to learn is how to set and cancel the alarm when necessary. This is often programmed with a simple push of the button.

Test Button – The test button allows you to quickly test the functionality of the alarm keypad with a press of the button. Experts recommend testing your keypad security system monthly. Remember that a non-working system offers you no protection.

User Code – Enter your own user code into the keypad to quickly and easily disarm the alarm keypad. Make the code easy for you to remember but hard for other people to guess. For example, don’t make the code your address or your license plate number because others can easily figure these out.

Keypad – The alarm control panel has a keypad that contains numbers. This is used to enter your alarm code into the keypad security system to activate the alarm, as well as to disarm it.

Battery Backup – The control panel typically has a standby battery that will allow you to use the panel should the electricity go out. Check the battery and replace it yearly. If the electricity does go out, the panel will typically function for up to 80 hours on battery backup.

Zones – If you have various zones set up in your living space, these may be controlled using buttons on your alarm keypad. When testing your alarm, be sure to test all zones to ensure they are working properly.

Emergency Panic Button – If equipped, the emergency panic button will give you 24/7 access to your security provider. Simply push the button and get an immediate voice response. Then, communicate your needs to the security company for quick help.

Status Buttons – Some alarm keypad control panels come with fully synchronized zones that report continually with the main control panel. If one of the zones does not report, you will be informed by seeing a signal on the display of the unit.

Chime/Alarm – The control panel on an alarm keypad may in some cases act as a door chime. This can be programmed to chime anytime a door in the system is opened. The panel also has its own alarm signal that sounds when there is a compromise to the system.

Scheduling Features – The alarm keypad may have the ability to control various security features in the home. For example, you may be able to set and control the window alarms, lights or motion sensors by using the alarm keypad to schedule the alarm setting, as well as for immediate alarm setting.
